Happy days for the sepsis twins

- By Lucy Laing

THESE are the twins born after their mother developed lifethreatening sepsis in labour.

It was touch and go for Michelle Shaw and her unborn twins when she developed the lethal condition six hours into giving birth in September.

She became unwell and doctors had to deliver the babies by emergency caesarean.

She says she can’t remember the first 24 hours after their birth and feels lucky to be alive.

The twins, Albie and Cobie, were born safely and are recovering at home in Kendal, Cumbria.

Mrs Shaw, 34, who lives with husband Danny, 38, a railway technical engineer, and their sons, Lochlan, nine, Olly, seven, Logan, six, and Lawson, 20 months, said: “I was expecting an easy labour after already delivering four boys.

“I never expected anything like this. It was shocking. We feel very lucky the twins and I made it through safely.”

Mrs Shaw, a receptionist for a holiday company, told how her pregnancy progressed smoothly and she went into labour at 37 weeks at the end of September in Barrow General Hospital.

She said: “I wasn’t expecting anything to go wrong. I’d already given birth four times, so I was expecting it to be a fairly quick delivery.”

But six hours into the labour she started to feel unwell.

She said: “I suddenly felt sick and disorientated and very shivery. The doctors ran some tests and told me I had sepsis.

“It was frightening, I knew how serious sepsis could be.

“I was lucky I was in hospital. One minute I was fine, and the next minute I had developed a serious life-threatening condition.”

Albie and Cobie are now two months old and have no lasting effects.

Mrs Shaw said: “Luckily, they are both healthy and are doing really well.

“With six boys, I’ve nearly got a football team now.”
