RAFA HAILS TOON BATTLERS
Huddersfield 0 Newcastle 1 Ian Murtagh
RAFA BENITEZ saluted Newcastle for their battling qualities away from home after Salomon Rondon’s strike sealed a vital win and condemned Huddersfield to yet more home misery.
The Toon’s form on their travels is providing Premier League salvation, and boss Benitez said: “It is totally different the way teams play against you away from home and we knew they would be pushing on the front foot.
“You have to praise our players who defended really well against a physically strong side.”
There was nothing pretty about this win, but Newcastle fans will not complain as it takes them six points above the drop zone.
Rondon scored in the 55th minute after a crafted build-up that was in stark contrast to much of the artisan football on offer from both sides. “It was a great team goal,” added Benitez. “Rondon is doing what we brought him here to do – hold the ball up and score goals.”
Huddersfield had edged a fiercely-fought contest before the goal, but for a side who haven’t scored more than once on home soil in 14 games their spirit understandably sagged after Newcastle went ahead.
Danish powerhouse Phillip Billing was at the heart of all good things from the hosts, driving forward with menacing intent – but the Terriers desperately lack a finisher.
Chris Lowe forced Martin Dubravka into a full-length save, but for the last half an hour it was more perspiration than inspiration from the home side.
“The result is harsh and disappointing,” said Huddersfield boss David Wagner.
“We dominated the game and defended on the front foot but we could not come back after their goal.
“Newcastle are a well drilled team and difficult to break down.”
