Dangers for our young

HILE delivering Brexit is about shaping a better world for future generations, there are two stories in today’s newspaper that should give us grave concern about what our children face in the here and now.

Dr Alan Smith, the Bishop of St Albans, has rightly highlighted the way that 55,000 youngsters have a gambling problem, which seems to be fuelled by exposure to advertising and a betting culture online.

It is deeply worrying that this is a bigger problem than even drugs and alcohol. It must be tackled.

Meanwhile, police have warned that pupils now see being mugged as such a normal part of life that they do not even bother to report it.

Both disturbing stories show that much more needs to be done to protect our children.
