Shops on slippery slope

I agree with letter writer Elizabeth Baigent (“Shops must try harder”, January 6). Retailers such as M&S and many others are on the slippery slope downwards, largely due to incompeten­ce and failing to understand who their customers are and what they want.

Buyers have got it all wrong, spending money on rubbish and not even catering for larger sizes for men and women alike. Prices are a joke and the shopping experience becomes uncomforta­ble and when one needs a floor sales supervisor there are none available.

The internet is a new port of call for more savvy, customer-oriented retailers and until the high street brings back value, quality and proper sizing and hires buyers who are competent there will be a steady stream of business failures over the next 10 years until buyers and owners learn their lesson.
