Driver is run down by thieves in his own car

- By Jon Austin

A CAR owner was yesterday fighting for his life after being struck by his own vehicle after he tried to stop thieves driving it off.

The 63-year-old was left with serious head injuries after he was hit by his Citroen C1 as it was driven off outside his home in Ashford-underLyne, Greater Manchester, an area that has been described by a neighbour as a “Mecca for stealing”.

The theft happened in a cul-desac but the victim was hit near a mini roundabout in an adjacent street reached by a footpath at about 7.20am on Friday.

Neighbour, Kenneth Cooper, 66, a retired soldier, said: “I saw the car going down the road and it was not going at breakneck speed or anything.

“I thought it was him [the car owner] going to work, he normally did at that time.

“He’s run down the alleyway at the bottom while the car’s going around the corner.”

Many roads were sealed off by police for several hours as forensics officers searched for evidence.

Police asked residents in streets for CCTV.

Mr Cooper said: “He’s a pretty quiet bloke and doesn’t deserve what’s happened to him.

“This area is a Mecca for stealing. It’s not unusual at all.

The words “doctrine of hate” and “architect of genocide” were daubed in red on the grave of the most famous resident of

Highgate Cemetery in north London.

It follows a hammer attack on the monument two weeks ago.

British Museum spokesman Maxwell Blowfield, 31, said he was “quite shocked” to see the vandalism yesterday morning.

He said of the monument: “It’s a highlight of the cemetery. It’s a shame.

“The red paint will disappear, but to see that level of damage happen twice, it’s not good. I am just surprised that in 2019 somebody feels they need to do something like that.”

The Friends of Highgate Cemetery Trust had described the February 4 hammer attack on the Grade I-listed memorial as “very upsetting”.

No arrests have been made. A MAN accused of murdering three men aged in their 80s has been remanded in custody.

The charges follow the discovery of three bodies in two separate houses in the city last week.

“I’d like to appeal to anyone who saw the red Citroen C1 in the area at the time, or anyone with dashcam footage, to please get in touch with us as soon as you possibly can.”

Detectives later arrested a 46-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder and a 45-year-old woman on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Both were in custody last night as the victim remained in hospital in a critical condition.
