Shakespearean plotters
With regard to the meeting between Ken Clarke and the Speaker, John Bercow, as pictured on your front page, I am reminded of a quotation from Shakespeare (Julius Caesar):
“They are the faction. O conspiracy,
Shamest thou to show thy dangerous brow by night
When evils are most free? O, then by day Where wilt thou find a cavern dark enough To mask thy monstrous visage? Seek none, conspiracy.
Hide it in smiles and affability.”
Perhaps Clarke and Bercow need to remember that the play ends with the conspirators dead and their opponents in power. Peter Davey, Bournemouth
