Croatia’s hot interior sounds an unlikely setting for a dazzling waterland, but Plitvice’s 16 terraced lakes and 90 waterfalls, about a two-hour drive south of Zagreb, constitute one of Europe’s most beautiful national parks.
The water comes from the karstic Velebit mountains, and its high mineral content keeps it crystal clear, so with blue skies and forest surrounds the result is a kaleidoscope of stunning colours and reflections, threaded by long boardwalks.

KE Adventure Travel (0176 861 5821/ keadventure.com) offers six days from £1,295, including most meals and return flights from the UK.
