Dolly turned down Cowell’s big money deal

- By Ed Gleave

DOLLY PARTON has revealed she snubbed a big money offer from Simon Cowell to be a judge on X Factor.

The Country music icon, 73, said she is too busy working nine-to-five on other projects to be on the panel.

It’s not the only high-profile singing contest she’s turned down. The Voice was given the same response.

Dolly said: “They ask me all the time. I just haven’t had time to do it.

“I have been a mentor on The Voice over in America, although not as a judge.” Although Dolly is regularly offered lucrative TV contracts she has bad memories of working on the small screen on US network ABC in the 1980s. She said: “Years ago I did a variety show and it wasn’t what I wanted it to be and I wasn’t able to be my own self in it.

“It just was not good and I was not happy doing it.”

Dolly has kept her focus on music over six decades.

Hits including Jolene and Islands In The Stream have made her one of the biggest-selling artists.

Even when she starred in movies, music has always been at the forefront. When she starred in comedy 9 To 5 in 1980 she penned the theme tune.

Her latest project is 9 To 5: The Musical, inspired by the film. Starring Brian Conley and Amber Davies, it is playing the Savoy Theatre in London’s West End.

Dolly flew in last weekend for its opening night, and it has received five-star reviews from critics.

Next up, Dolly will be returning to the big screen in a sequel to 9 To 5 — four decades after the original. It will see her reunite with co-stars Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda.

She said: “I’m very proud that 9 To 5 just keeps paying off. It is the song and the movie that just will not die!”
