‘Wild West’ fear after El Paso shootings

- From Mike Parker IN LOS ANGELES

AMERICANS now “expect it to be like the Wildwest” with daily gun murder rates so high they dwarf the mass shootings that have shocked the world.

Gun control lobbyists say that in one US state there have been more than 200 killings so far this year. It comes as grieving relatives yesterday buried most of the 31 victims of gun massacres in El Paso, texas and Dayton, Ohio.

But while those twin atrocities were unfolding, Baltimore, Maryland – a city with a population slightly lower than that of Leeds or Glasgow – recorded its 200th killing this year.

Chicago recorded its worst weekend of firearms violence this year. From Friday night to Monday morning, 59 people were shot, including a five-year-old boy. Seven died.

Mass shootings represent only a fraction of gun deaths. Last year, there were 14,611. Of these only 140 were victims of the 25 mass shootings across the country in 2018.
