TV drama as Waterman barges fellow boaters out of the way

- By Michael Booker

YOU’D never tell from his name but music producer Petewaterman was left all at sea when he tried to skipper a barge for a newtv show.

Pete took over the captain’s duties on the vessel for a new series of a Channel 5 celebrity barging show alongside crewmates broadcaster Anne Diamond, former Goodie Bill Oddie and long-time BBC Royal Editor Jennie Bond.

But Pete, 72, was responsible for giving his crew, and those on another boat, a rude awakening early one morning when he ploughed headlong

into another barge – sending it soaring into the air.

A show source said: “Pete loved skippering the barge and usually took control wherever they were.

“He’s absolutely obsessed with all forms of transport and fancies himself as an expert in everything.

“However, good though he is, he didn’t have total control all of the time and things certainly went awry on this occasion.

“It made quite a noise and brought everyone up from down below.

“The people on the other barge took it surprisingly well given that they were in their pyjamas when it happened.things were smoothed over pretty quick with them and there was no harm done.

“But it was pretty embarrassing for Pete. It won’t rank as one of his greatest hits!”

The incident happened near Skipton on the Leeds and Liverpool canal during filming last month.

The next series of Celebrity 5 Go Barging, due to air later this year, follows the celebrities’ exploits on canals across Britain.

It follows a successful series starring John Prescott, Anita Harris, Michael Buerk, Shaun Williamson and Amanda Barrie.

They toured two of France’s most famous waterways on a narrowboat.

A show source said: “The series was a great hit with viewers.

“There’s something about life on the canals that is so therapeutic for viewers to watch.

“We hope viewers will have the same reaction to the series in Britain as they did with the one in France.”
