Sporting ‘cure’ for knife crime

- By Liz Perkins

VULNERABLE youngsters are being given mixed martial arts skills in a drive to turn them from knife crime.

A six-week Knives Down Gloves Up programme, which is being launched in February, has been inspired by the surge in popularity of MMA, a full contact combat sport allowing striking and grappling.

Controversial UFC stars, including Conor Mcgregor, have raised its profile. Self-defence and discipline are also being taught.

Ten people who police in Swindon fear are prone to knife crime will be involved in the course at Grange Leisure and Community Centre in Stratton. Life skills and healthy eating advice will also be taught. Gary

Turland, senior fitness officer at Grange, said: “I saw a 14-year-old pull a knife on someone and it really shocked me. I’ve heard of similar projects for boxing but never for MMA. It became a passion.”

He added: “My daughter said she knew of boys at her school who carried knives, which really made the issue hit home and I hope this scheme is a good deterrent.”

Gracie Barra Jiu Jitsu and Scorpion Kickboxing Gym staff are being signed up to teach. The scheme is backed by Patrick Green of The Ben Kinsella Trust. Ben, 16, was stabbed to death in 2008.
