CREAM OF THE KOP
LIVERPOOL legend Alan Kennedy could hardly believe his eyes as he watched Jurgen Klopp’s side take another impressive step towards a long-awaited league title against Leicester.
It had nothing to do with the celebratory pints he and a group of mates were downing in a Southport hostelry, surrounded by groups of expectant Kop fans as they watched Thursday night’s game unfold on a big-screen TV.
“What a fantastic performance,” said Kennedy. “They were so clinical. It was incredible to be able to play like that after coming back from an exhausting trip to Qatar.”
It was also a night that fullbacks Trent Alexanderarnold and Andy Robertson turned back the clock to the Seventies and
Eighties, when
Kennedy and Phil
Neal ruled the flanks as similar rampaging defenders.
League titles and European Cups flowed, almost as regularly as the pair blazed a trail down the width of the pitch.
“I don’t think you would swap these two with anyone else in the world,” Kennedy added. “Having Virgil van Dijk alongside you is a good start. He is a magnificent defender and allows the full-backs licence to get forward. “Trent takes the opposing defenders out of the equation with his magnificent delivery. He always knows a Liverpool player has a great chance of getting onto the cross. He immediately places teams under pressure. It puts any defender on the back foot.” keep both eyes on him. He’s in the form of his life at the moment – it’s a pleasure to be playing alongside him. “He’s been coming inside and teams don’t know what to do with him.
“He’s linking up with Raul and getting a lot of assists and goals – and long may it continue.”
