Long Bailey is Left in the cold

- By David Maddox POLITICAL EDITOR

SUPPORTERS of Rebecca Long Bailey are switching to rival Lisa Nandy in the Labour leadership contest as the “only realistic chance” to get a Left-winger to take over from Jeremy Corbyn.

In a bid to stop bookies’ favourite Sir Keir Starmer from winning the election, MPS have told the Sunday Express that Ms Nandy is now the only contender who could stop him.

MPS have confirmed that supporters are tactically switching their first vote to Ms Nandy to ensure she is second on the ballot.

A senior MP said: “It’s all about second preferences now. If Rebecca comes second then Lisa’s votes are split between her and Keir, which means Keir wins.

“But if Lisa Nandy comes second then all Rebecca’s voters’ second preference will be Lisa and she can beat Keir.”

The “stop Keir” campaign has come around partly because the millionaire former Director of Public

Prosecutions is seen as a “Blairite”.

However, the main reason is because of outrage over the way he forced Labour into its unpopular Brexit policy based on Sir Keir’s desire to overturn the referendum and Remain.

This has been blamed by the far-left for Labour losing dozens of formerly safe seats in the North and Midlands.

There is also fury that Starmer did not front the Brexit policy himself and let others take the flak.a shadow cabinet member said: “Keir came up with the policy but then stood back and let others front it.”
