Mozart Week began, curiously enough, with a salute to Handel’s The Messiah in Mozart’s Der Messias – works by past masters were sometimes adapted to 18th-century tastes. Handel’s baroque Messiah of 1742 was given a twist of classic Mozart with extra parts for wind instruments, particularly flutes, to enrich the sound.
