Mozart moved tovienna in 1781 to compose magnificen­t operas such as Don Giovanni,the Marriage Of Figaro and The Magic Flute, dying tragically young from a fever at 35.

Mozart Week began, curiously enough, with a salute to Handel’s The Messiah in Mozart’s Der Messias – works by past masters were sometimes adapted to 18th-century tastes. Handel’s baroque Messiah of 1742 was given a twist of classic Mozart with extra parts for wind instrument­s, particular­ly flutes, to enrich the sound.

Charles Jennens’s original libretto was translated into German too (fortunatel­y English subtitles are provided).
