“But why?” Mr Bear sits down, looking puzzled at the disappearance of the clock cuckoo.

Rupert is sure that it must have flown away, and seeing that the window is open, he gets permission to go out and search.

Finding no sign of the truant in the garden he goes farther. Yet again a noisy crowd of birds fluttering round a bush fly away as he approaches.

In the following silence he stops suddenly. “There’s a cuckoo somewhere,” he breathes. “Surely it’s my cuckoo’s voice!”
