“One time Nick was banging on the door and shouting, ‘Hey mom.’ When she didn’t reply he burst through and found her submerged in the water.

“Someone must have slipped on the rule the night she died.”

Whitney’s death when she was just 48 introduced a new layer of chaos into her children’s lives.

Jon said: “It was too much for those kids. When Bobbi Kristina turned 21 she got a slice of her inheritance and after that those kids could have anything they wanted.

“Her dad was trying to stop her from seeing Nick, saying he was after her money, and that caused a big falling out.

“Nick was not after her money. They almost got married in Las Vegas a year before she died but they decided not to go through with it because it didn’t feel right. Nick was in love.”

Nick and Bobbi Kristina had argued on the night of her fatal accident and he had gone to a friend’s house to calm down.

Frantic efforts were made to revive her after she was found in the tub and it was decided to put her into a medically induced coma. She would never recover.

Bobbi Kristina – the sole beneficiary of her mother’s £15million fortune – died from pneumonia aged 22 on July 26, 2015. A toxicology report later revealed she had been drinking, smoking marijuana and taking prescription drugs on the night she passed out.

Bobby Brown refused to let Nick visit his girlfriend in hospital and he also barred him from the funeral.

A year later Nick was found responsible for Bobbi Kristina’s wrongful death and ordered to pay $36million (£27.5million) to her estate. He is not believed to have repaid a penny.

Jon said: “Can you imagine not being able to see your love until after she is in the ground? Michelle was worried he was going to kill himself.

“All day every day he was popping pills and crying.that’s when his mother staged an intervention and he was talked into going to detox.”

Nick had put his life back together before he died from a suspected drugs overdose, according to his dad. He had started a landscape gardening business in Florida, had a new girlfriend and changed his last name to Bouler in honour of his dad.

Jon said: “Before he died, I told Nick, ‘Whitney is gone and Bobbi Kristina too and I don’t want you to become the third’.

“He said, ‘I’m not going to be the third, I’ve got my life together, I don’t take drugs.’

“I’m not angry at Whitney – she had her own demons and money had not brought her happiness. But you can’t be a good influence on children when you are on drugs – and her mansion became a toxic place for my son.”
