MY TV LIFE

Cheryl Baker

-

Singer Cheryl, 66 today, is best known as a member of Bucks Fizz who won the 1981 Eurovision Song Contest with Making Your Mind Up

What was your first TV memory?

The Woodentops on Watch With Mother, and Rag, Tag And Bobtail. But the first TV show that really influenced me was Sandie Shaw winning Eurovision in 1967. I was 13 and that gave me the incentive to do the same. Fourteen years later, Bucks Fizz won. I fulfilled my ambition.

Who was your first TV crush?

Davy Jones in The Monkees. My heart used to flutter when I heard the opening theme tune. When I saw him I used to melt.years later I met him when I was working in a restaurant in Battersea.and he was a disappointment. Not only was he shorter than me, he also did the “Don’t you know who I am?” thing when he couldn’t get a table.

What was your first TV appearance?

It was in 1976 at the Royal Albert Hall for A Song For Europe. Brotherhood Of Man won and my band, Coco, came second.

What is your favourite current show?

Right now it’s Silent Witness. It was Fleabag and it was Peaky Blinders... but I love loads of telly. I love Call The Midwife and, of course, Dancing On Ice because I was on that.

Which TV show would you take to a desert island?

The Two Ronnies. I loved the songs, the skits, the gags. I love all comedy but The Two Ronnies were special.when my daughters were 14 my husband Steve and I went out for the night and they called us to say they were watching “two old boys who were so funny, both called Ronnie”. They cross generations.

What TV show would you like to put out of its misery?

The Masked Singer – apparently I was in series one.they thought I was the Fox. I watched it for 10 seconds, that was enough. Dreadful.

Guiltiest TV pleasure? The Chase! I never miss it. I adore Bradley – he’s brilliant – and the Chasers are really clever. They asked me to do the celebrity version once but I couldn’t. I wish they’d ask again, although I’d be fairly scared.

What are you up to at the moment?

Me, Mike Nolan and Jay Ashton now perform as the Fizz.we have our new album and we’re doing a tour to promote it.

● The Fizz’s album Smoke & Mirrors is out now.
