I’M AT THIS CLUB TO WIN TROPHIES

Maguire’s Euro rallying call

- From David Mcdonnell in Cologne

HARRY MAGUIRE knows trophies are the only true measure of success at a club the size of Manchester United. United have reached three semi-finals this season but have yet to lift a trophy, with Maguire determined to end that run and cap his first season by winning the Europa League.

This has been a season of progress for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, finishing third in the Premier League to ensure they will be back in the Champions League next season.

But United skipper Maguire, 27, said he made his £80million switch from Leicester to win silverware and wants to start that process now, ahead of tonight’s semi-final against Sevilla. “I joined this club to win trophies,” said Maguire. “I fully expect to win trophies while I’m at this club. “Getting to semi-finals isn’t good enough for this club.

“It’s been a promising year in the Premier League, we’ve finished third. “It’s not something that this club wants to do, finish third, but at the start of the season from where we were last year, I’m sure a lot of people would have taken that.

“But, for the future, that’s not where we want to be. We want to be winning trophies, the Premier

League and other cups.

“So semi-finals are nice to get to, but you’ve really got to get the job done and make the final and then go on to win it.”

The Europa League may not be at the same level as the Champions League in terms of its standing, prestige or the quality of the opposition.

But Maguire knows how important winning it would be in terms of the development of this United side and its ability to compete for the bigger prizes next season.

“It’s big to win any trophy,” said Maguire. “It’s really big.

“Obviously some competitions are bigger than others, but every trophy is really important for this club.

“Whatever the competition, every game you play for United you’ve got to win and you’re expected to win.

“This is a tournament where we’ve performed well up to now, haven’t conceded many goals and been really solid.

“Now we’ve got to go and prove we deserve to be in the final.”
