Red-hot Hollie joins elite level

- RACING By Chris Goulding

ASCOT might be the Queen’s racecourse but it was Hollie Doyle who reigned at the track on QIPCO British Champions Day when riding a double.

This season, Doyle, 24, has repeatedly shown she is the new riding sensation destined to take championship honours.

Earlier this week, she broke her own record for winners in one season – 117.

Yesterday another milestone was recorded when she pocketed her first Group One success with Glen Shiel in the British Champions Sprint

Stakes, just 35 minutes after winning the Group Two Long Distance Cup on Trueshan.

“It’s a dream come true,” said Doyle, who might lack size standing just five feet tall, but she has a gift for making horses run. “I’m in a bit of a shock at the moment.”

For good measure, her long-term partner Tom

Marquand also joined in the celebrations by recording his own double with Addeybb and Njord.

After Marquand’s second success, it was suggested the golden couple would be married but he said: “We have been together for seven years but have not got a ring ready yet. We will have to wait until we have a rare day off!”

In the opening event on the richest day’s racing in the UK calendar when £2.54million was up for grabs, Doyle made history by becoming the first female to ride a winner on Champions Day after winning on Trueshan.

“I have to pinch myself really as that was an amazing experience,” said Doyle.

“I am really happy people are seeing me as just a jockey now and not a female jockey.”
