Britain is divided as anti-maskers protest and a doctor pleads with us to follow rules...

-

THE controversy over how to deal with coronavirus grew more heated yesterday, as medics in hard-hit Liverpool urged people to follow the Tier 3 rules by showing a harrowing video of Covid patients on ventilators... while thousands of anti-mask protesters marched through London.

Liverpool doctors and nurses warned that the city’s Covid-19 intensive care wards are now under pressure. The video showed staff at Royal Liverpool Hospital performing heart compressions on a patient.

ITU sister Louise Lightfoot said: “It’s like living your worst nightmare. Staff are seeing at first hand the result of what’s going on outside the hospital. People are deteriorating at a much faster pace now. We’re all doing the best we can to keep everyone safe but we need more people out there to do what they can also.”

Critical care consultant Dr Richard Wenstone added: “It is killing people and it’s going to continue to kill people until there’s a vaccine.”

He said there is “no doubt that the really harsh lockdown in the spring made a difference” and that “if people stick to the rules, we can cut down transmission”.

Their pleas came as Jeremy Corbyn’s brother Piers fronted a demonstration in central London against the lockdown rules, with the city beginning life under Tier 2 restrictions.

The anti-mask protesters held placards reading “Lockdown kills”, “Burn your mask” and “This is now tyranny”. The Met Police reported only one arrest.
