Bridgerton’s horses better not park there... haven’t they ever seen yellow lines before?

- By Michael Booker

WITH its fast and loose approach to historical accuracy, regency London-set Bridgerton has driven a coach and horses through the usual rules of period drama.

But there is one detail thetv hit may regret not changing.

Eagle-eyed viewers have spotted yellow lines painted on the road in the show’s opening scenes.

The gaffe appears just minutes into the Netflix series, where viewers first see horse-drawn carriages making their way around one of Bath’s most famous landmarks, the Royal Crescent.

One viewer tweeted: “Really enjoying Bridgerton but with the technology available to filmmakers these days, a yellow line?” Another joked: “Didn’t realise they had yellow lines painted on the roads in the 1800s!”.

Another added: “I’ve so far spotted a single yellow line and a telecoms manhole cover. I didn’t realise

19th century Brits were such pioneers.”

Based on the best-selling books by Julia Quinn, narrated by Dame Julie Andrews and starring British actress Phoebe Dynevor as Daphne Bridgerton, the period drama set in the early 1800s follows the Bridgerton family and their high society lives and romances.

Yellow lines first appeared on our roads in the 1950s, decades after the first road markings, white lines, appeared in 1918.

Away from the error, critics and fans have praised the show’s fantasy approach to history in terms of costumes and characters.the show’s historical adviser, Dr Hannah Greig, describes Bridgerton as “a combination of a historical truth – which is to say that the past is more diverse than we tend to see on screen, and we tend to accept in our popular imagination. But it’s also a fictionalising, asking what history might look like under certain different circumstances.”

Bath was a key location for the show. No.1 Royal Crescent’s exterior is used for the home of the Featherington family.
