MOUNT’S TOO VALUABLE TO GET TIME OFF

- By Harry Pratt

FRANK LAMPARD admits Mason Mount is fast becoming Chelsea’s new untouchable. Jose Mourinho famously described Lampard – and eight of the Blues’ 2006 Premier League winning line-up – that way during his first spell as Stamford Bridge boss.

And listening to Lampard wax lyrical about the ever-growing importance of sizzling playmaker Mount, it is clear he holds him in similarly high regard.

The England midfielder may be just 22 but, rest assured, he is an automatic pick every week in a team searching for inspiration.

Which is why his under-fire manager, with three wins in the last eight games in all competitions, is unlikely to give him the afternoon off today against Championship side Luton in the FA Cup.

Yes, Mount could do with a breather, having appeared in all but two domestic fixtures this term.

Yet the visit of the Hatters is a must-win clash for Chelsea, who are eighth in the Premier League.

Lampard said: “He’s crucial – and there’s always a fine balance in this job as to when you can rest players that are crucial to the team.

“At the moment, Mason is playing well, so he’s a player that stays in the team for that. People talk to me about changing the team and why.when people are playing well, I have no problem keeping them in.

“But on the flip side, Mason is as fit as they come. He trains, he rests, he does everything professionally right.

“So, if anyone can handle the games and minutes, it’s Mason.”

Earlier this season some punters and pundits were questioning the unwavering loyalty shown to Mount by both Lampard and England boss Gareth Southgate.

But they have gone increasingly quiet of late as the Blues’ one-time academy starlet justifies his status with persistently outstanding displays.

Lampard added: “Now he is getting real recognition for it and I think he’s growing.

“Tough times are sometimes good for young players because they see things around them and see how other players react.”
