MRI pioneer dies at 94

THE British physicist who pioneered the developmen­t of MRI has died aged 94.

The University of Aberdeen announced the death of Professor John Mallard, its inaugural professor of medical physics.

He led a team in building the first whole-body “magnetic resonance imaging” scanner.

Clinicians were then able to carry out the world’s first full body scan of a patient.

Today, MRI technology is used all over the world in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, dementia and a wide range of other conditions.

TWO teenagers died after being stabbed in separate incidents just a few hours apart, writes Jon Coates.

An 18-year-old man died in hospital after a knife attack near a pub in Leigh-on-sea, Essex, at around 6pm on Friday.two people have been arrested.

And a man, believed to be 19, was found with stab injuries in Paddington Green, west London, at about 9.15pm. He died at the scene 45 minutes later. No one had been arrested yesterday.
