- By Clive Hetherington

NEIL WARNOCK denied old mate

Mick Mccarthy a magnificent seven wins in a row.

But Cardiff boss Mccarthy extended his unbeaten start with the Welsh club to nine games.

Skipper Sean Morrison gave

Cardiff a 37th-minute lead from a long throw by Will Vaulks.

But Paddy Mcnair (above) equalised eight minutes from time. Boro’s

ex-cardiff boss Neil Warnock said: “The lads responded brilliantly and competed so well, apart from that long throw.”

Mccarthy said: “Warney’s team used to launch everything into the box. He said something to me about that and I said, ‘Well, you bought them all – I’m just using them!’”

GYLFI SIGURDSSON insists Everton will be better prepared to compete in the Europa League than they were last time.

Carlo Ancelotti’s stars are aiming for a European place for the first time since a disastrous group campaign under Ronald Koeman in 2017.

The Toffees finished third in their group, winning just one of their six games.

As they prepare to meet Southampton tomorrow, Sigurdsson (above) is confident they would fare better under Ancelotti’s guidance. He said:

“It’s still a guessing game if we make it into Europe.

“The squad is stronger and with a manager who has experienced a lot, I’d like to think we’d do well if we are in it.”

Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl has warned Ancelotti not to underestimate his side.

Saints halted a great run by Everton earlier this campaign and Hasenhuttl said: “We were the first team to beat them for the season (2-0 in October). We have to give it our best.”

BRITAIN’S Adam

Yates came second on his debut for Ineos Grenadiers at the UAE Tour despite crashing heavily.

There appeared to be a tangle between the Ineos riders in the peloton with about 40km to go on yesterday’s final stage and Yates (below) landed face down.

He finished 35 seconds behind overall winner Tadej Pogacar after rivals slowed up to allow him to be treated.

The collision happened on a straight stretch of road and Yates hit his head hard as riders fell around him.

Pogacar, the 2020 Tour de France winner, had to take evasive action.

Yates was checked over by the Ineos team doctor before getting back on the bike and continuing, while having cuts dressed by the team in the medical car.

He was later taken to hospital for further checks. His team say he does not appear to have suffered any injuries other than “facial abrasions”.

Ineos’ Daniel Martinez had to abandon the race before the end while Lotto-soudal’s Caleb Ewan won the final stage after a bunch sprint.
