I’m Spurs’ special one jokes Sergio

- By Tom Hopkinson

SERGIO REGUILON doesn’t miss a beat when asked if something special is behind Tottenham’s defensive resurgence.

“Yes, I’m back,” quips the full-back.

“I’m joking, I’m joking,” he quickly adds. “Maybe there are moments in the season when we are tired or the game is an unlucky one.

“But now we are in a good moment and we must build on it.”

That good moment is built on Spurs tightening up at the back. In their last five league and Europa League games they have conceded just two goals.

They host Crystal Palace today back in contention for a top-four place and Spaniard Reguilon (right) said: “Now the feeling is we can arrive in the top four because we have a very good squad.

“We know it’s difficult but we have the players to get it.”

Sky Sports’ Jamie Redknapp, a former Spurs star, agrees. But, as last weekend’s clash with fellow pundit Roy Keane proved, not everyone does. Keane dismissed Jose Mourinho’s side as ‘average’ and said only Harry Kane and Heung-min Son were top-class.

Redknapp hit back, claiming Reguilon is “as good a left-back as there is in the country”.

“That’s why

Madrid let him go,” Keane responded sarcastically.

Reguilon said: “This is Roy Keane’s opinion but we have a lot of top-class players in our team.”

The only sour note so far at Spurs for Reguilon, 24, was when he broke lockdown rules at Christmas.

It upset boss Mourinho, not least because he had bought a suckling pig for Reguilon – a top gesture of friendship in Spain and Portugal.

“I know Jose wants the best for me and I feel the same about him,” added Reguilon.

“And it was a big bit of pork.

‘‘I ate it all alone at home on December 25, I promise!”
