‘Cut funding to woke charities’

MPS concerned white working class children being left behind at school

ORGANISATIONS which use or promote the term “white privilege” should no longer get taxpayers’ cash, an MP has demanded.

Tory Tom Hunt wants the recommendation included in a key parliamentary report on why white workingclass children are being left behind at school.

The Ipswich MP’S demand comes after charities and other organisations have started lecturing parents about “white privilege”. An Education Select Committee inquiry has found just 22 per cent of white children receiving free school meals go to university compared with 45 per cent of black children and 56 per cent of Asian children in the same economic bracket. Experts have warned the committee that discriminating in favour of BAME groups has harmed white working-class children. During the hearings Javed Khan, chief executive of Barnado’s, defended the charity’s recent online guide to white privilege.

He said the intention was not to be “woke”. He added: “We simply provided advice on our website to help families to engage with that discussion – that is what it was. We support all disadvantaged children, irrespective of race, colour or creed.”

But Mr Hunt, who is on the committee, said terms like white privilege are unhelpful to white working-class children and make them feel more excluded from education.

He said: “We need to help all disadvantaged children – white, black or Asian.

“This is why I want the Education Select Committee’s report to recommend organisations which use the term white privilege should not be in receipt of public money.”

It is believed that Labour MPS on the committee will oppose his proposal but the Conservative majority should ensure it is included.

Mr Hunt is also a member of the Common Sense Group of Tory MPS which has been lobbying ministers to drop funding for charities and bodies which attack British history.
