LO CELSO: WE MUST MAKE AMENDS NOW

- By Harry Pratt

GIOVANI LO CELSO has opened up on Tottenham’s Wembley disaster – admitting they were devastated to let the fans down. A 1-0 defeat to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup Final last Sunday means the club’s silverware drought will continue into a 14th year.

And Lo Celso has revealed the heartache at their failure to land that elusive trophy – and provide some long-overdue joy to the supporters.

Ahead of today’s home clash against doomed Sheffield United, the Argentine midfielder said: “We were very, very down in the dressing room afterwards.

“It was a feeling of great sadness at losing the game.

“We were disappointed we couldn’t bring a trophy home for the supporters.that’s what we wanted to do for the club and for the fans.

“That was our big desire and it was a pity.we played okay but these big games, in particular finals, get decided on small details.

“It was a shame to lose to a goal from a dead-ball situation. As a team and as a squad, we felt very hurt by the loss.”

Talking of finals, Lo Celso reckons there are five more left for Spurs to save a season that had promised so much early on.

Maximum points between now and May 22 could enable the North Londoners, who following Jose Mourinho’s sacking have Ryan Mason as caretaker coach, to snatch a top-four finish. Do that – and qualify for the Champions League in the process – and the team, who were leading the league four months ago, will have something to show for their efforts.

With five games left, Spurs are seventh in the table, eight points behind Chelsea.

Lo Celso, 25, went on: “I don’t think there’s any apparent reason or explanation for some of the results we’ve had.

“We put in some great performances and played some great games but sometimes that’s not been the case.

“We can almost treat these next five games like five finals – must-win games.

“It’s like an apprenticeship, it’s a process of getting through them and learning about ourselves.

“We’re part of a very big club here and everyone has very high expectations. Those expectations are to be in the Champions League.”
