Hotel of the week
Telegraph Hotel Coventry
WHERE AND WHY
Coventry might not immediately spring to mind as a city break destination, but its status as the 2021 UK City of Culture and host of the 2022 Commonwealth Games means there has never been a better time to visit.
And nowhere has seen more of the city’s cultural emergence than the iconic former Coventry Evening Telegraph newspaper offices and printworks. The building was recently saved from ruin by two brothers who have spent £20million transforming it into a chic 1950s-style hotel complete with elegant mid-century design features and a rooftop bar. Think Mad Men meets modern day comforts.
COVID CHECK-IN
Guests and diners are asked to check in by scanning the NHS QR codes in the foyer, while hand sanitisers are dotted throughout the building.
ON THE MENU
A magnificent glass ceiling provides a stunning overhang to Forme & Chase, the all-day bar and restaurant with some of the newspaper’s most famous front pages forming a mesmerising backdrop to the high gable roof.
There is an extensive drinks menu featuring local suppliers and the food is top notch too – make sure you try the small plate cod cheek scampi with tangy tartare sauce (£7.50). Our butterflied grilled chicken Caesar salad was £14 and the slow-braised beef short rib £18.
WHILE YOU’RE THERE
The City of Culture celebrations run throughout 2021 and feature everything from reggaedrenched parties, moving theatre performances and a waterway festival on the canal.
Don’t leave the hotel without having a drink on the Telegraph Hotel’s south-facing rooftop bar, Generators, with views over the Belgrade Theatre.
Make sure to book though – thousands have already sipped drinks looking over the city since the rooftop bar opened in April this year, and it’s proving increasingly popular.
