England ace Phil backs kid Billy to shine for Scots

- By John Moynihan

BILLY GILMOUR has been backed to shine in Scotland’s Euro 2020 campaign – by a fellow young star who is ready to rule for England.

Scotland boss Steve Clarke says he has ‘‘selection problems’’ for tomorrow’s Group D opener against Czech Republic – and may inject some added inspiration into his side.

Chelsea kid Gilmour (left), who has shown flashes of his talent in his few club appearances and briefly lit up Scotland’s warm-up friendly victory over Luxembourg last Sunday, could provide that spark.

Gilmour, 20, has certainly caught the eye of England’s Phil Foden, another supremely gifted youngster, who believes he could do a job for the Scots.

The Manchester City star said: “Billy Gilmour is a great talent. He’s still so young and still has a lot to learn, but I’ve played against him a few times and every time I have played against him I have been impressed.

“He is definitely going to be a great player in the future and he will be a great player for Scotland.’’

With Manchester United’s Scott Mctominay and Aston Villa’s John Mcginn – Scotland’s principle goal threat – seemingly certain starters, Gilmour will be scrapping for a final spot in a likely central midfield three.

Last night Clarke said: “I’ve picked my team except one position. But I’m pretty sure which way I’ll go with it.

“The players won’t know my team selection until the day of the game.

“I will tell them in the morning.that gives them the afternoon to rest in their rooms and prepare mentally for the game.’’
