Now Murray must focus on Olympics

- By Tom Hopkinson

ANDY MURRAY will take the positives and negatives of a gruelling week at Wimbledon into his preparations for this month’s Olympic Games.

The two-time champion of SW19 failed to make the second week after losing 6-4 6-2 6-2 late on Friday night to Denis Shapovalov.

And he has now returned from the Wimbledon hotel in Waterloo to his Surrey home for some rest and recuperation with his family, from whom he has been separated during the tournament.

But once he has caught up with everything back at base it will be back to business to prepare his bid for a fourth Olympic medal to go with the singles gold and mixed doubles silver he won at London 2012, and the singles gold he won at Rio 2016.

Murray said: “Obviously, I need to get some practice in – I’ve spoken to Joe Salisbury and I want to spend a bit of time preparing with him as well, do some doubles stuff.

“I’ve never played with him before, so it will be good to spend some time on the court together practising.

“There were moments at Wimbledon of some really good tennis mixed in with some pretty bad moments.

“I should really have been off the court in three sets against Nikoloz Basilashvili, where I was playing well, and there’s no excuse for that.

“And the last couple of sets against Oscar Otte, I did play some good tennis there.

“But the consistency is the thing that has been all over the place and that’s something we’ll need to change in the next couple of months.

“I got through a week of a Slam without getting injured, so it was a positive that I got through the event without getting hurt.

“But, yeah, the negative, I guess, is that I can do better tennis-wise.

“I can play better and close matches out better.

“But to do that, I need time on the match court and I need more time on the practice court, and I’ve had neither in the last few months.”
