Baroness on Boris and that brooch

- By Tony Whitfield

THE former president of the Supreme Court has defended its decision to rule Boris Johnson’s prorogation of Parliament as unlawful, saying, “we aren’t governed by public opinion, we are governed by the law”.

Brenda Hale, Baroness Hale of Richmond, also insisted the twinkling spider brooch she wore while delivering the court’s 2019 judgment had no hidden message, after conspiracy theories had sprung up.

She told BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs that when she started out on her legal path she faced sexism. But the death of her father when she was just 13 made her determined to carve out a career for herself.

Baroness Hale, 76, broke many “glass ceilings” after studying law at Cambridge: first woman and youngest to be appointed to the

Law Commission; first female Law Lord; first woman to serve on the Supreme Court and its first female president.
