Max effort lifts Bruce in struggle

- By Simon Bird

ALLAN SAINT-MAXIMIN has been branded “scary” by boss Steve Bruce.

As Newcastle players vowed to fight through fan chants against their boss, saying they will “grind on”, Bruce reckons French ace Saint-maximin is key to grabbing their first win of the season next weekend.

Last season the winger only lasted 90 minutes a handful of times but he has already completed five full games this term – and grabbed the equaliser in the 1-1 draw with Leeds on Friday.

Bruce has repeated his desire to battle on despite some fans demanding his sacking again.

The character that Bruce’s players showed to battle back from a chaotic first half-hour, in which they fell behind, and get on top in the second half means his position is safe.

None of his players downed tools, despite claims of friction behind the scenes, and there is a doubt whether Mike Ashley would want the hassle and expense of changing managers.

Bruce (right) highlighted Saintmaximin’s poor timekeeping and is managing him carefully. The Toon boss said: “There is no doubt he is improving.

“When he plays like he did against Leeds, yes, maybe he could slide a pass in here and there. And he drives us mad with his timekeeping.

“But people want to watch him. His natural ability is scary, his pace and power are a defender’s nightmare.

Bruce said that in Callum Wilson’s injury absence, Saintmaximin has enjoyed playing through the middle.

“He can go either way and that helps him,” the manager added.

Saint-maximin went against the tide of some fans by stating he “really loves” Bruce, adding: “You have good times and bad, but we’re together and will stay together. I will do my best for him.”

“I am happy because the most important thing is to play. I want to keep going.”
