At last, good news on border security

-

WHO would be Rishi Sunak onwednesday when he has to deliver one of the most difficult but important Budgets since the Second World War?

Somehow the Chancellor has to find a way to balance the books, encourage economic growth, pay off the Covid debt, upskill the nation and improve our security among many other demands.

It is certainly a challenge but one the Sunday Express believes he is more than capable of meeting.

The early signs are good with the two big pre-budget announcements in this newspaper today.

Finally, it seems, we have a Government that is willing to put in the investment to secure our borders and tackle the continuous flow of illegal migrants across the Channel as well as close the door on organised crime.

A new fleet of state-of -the-art patrol boats and digital technology to properly secure our borders are not before time.

Just as important is the £3billion to train adults in new skills.

The lorry drivers crisis has been a taster of a skills shortage in this country and we have to start looking at our own workforce before bringing in cheap foreign labour to fill gaps in the job market.

All this is a vision of a Government which is set on making the most of Brexit freedoms and is determined that Britain comes out of the pandemic crisis as a turbo-charged economy ready to take on the world.

However, there should also be room for compassion in the Budget and Spending Review on Wednesday.

So we would suggest that Mr Sunak takes the opportunity to find the £50million needed to fund a Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Institute, mentioned right, so we can finally find a cure for this horrendous terminal medical condition.
