Unmasked Heather moves on out

- By Julia Kuttner

THE FIRST celebrity to be voted off the new series of The Masked Singer last night was M People star Heather Small.

The 56-year-old singer performed as Chandelier. She was unmasked after finishing in the bottom three with Firework and Mushroom.

After the judging panel of Jonathan Ross, Davina Mccall, Rita Ora and comedian Mo Gilligan decided to first save Firework and then Mushroom, Small was unmasked to gasps, with no one correctly guessing her identity.

When asked why she had decided to do the show Small – best known for M People hit Moving On Up – said she had been inspired by watching her friends Gabrielle and the winner of the last series Joss Stone. She also revealed she had disguised her voice, saying: “I’ve been told I’ve got quite a distinctive voice.”

Panellist Davina claims the show is now more popular with celebrities than Strictly. And she revealed there is no shortage of stars wanting to take part in the wackiest show on TV.

She said: “Lots of people won’t do Strictly because it’s very time consuming and it goes on for months and months, and they’ve got families or whatever.they might love to do it, but they can’t. This is very short because of the secrecy surrounding it, so that’s why we’re getting some of the names that Strictly doesn’t.

“A lot of people do it because they are not being judged for literally anything other than their singing voice.

“People just do it for the craic, you know, the fun. I think everybody loves the training that you get. The vocal coach is amazing.”

Davina has even got her sights set on some very famous names. Asked whether she would like the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to be on the show, she said: “It would be so good!”
