THE family who inspired All Creatures Great And Small are “delighted” the hit drama is returning for two more series.

Channel 5 has revealed that the evocative series, which has been a huge ratings hit, will return for seasons three and four, plus a Christmas special for each run.

Jimwight and Rosie Page, the children of original creator James Wight, welcomed the return.

“For many years,” they said, “the books of James Herriot [Wight’s pen name] provided a source of comfort to tens of thousands of people worldwide at difficult times in their lives.

“With this recent adaptation, a new generation has been introduced to the joys of the Herriot stories.we are delighted there are to be at least two more series.”

The drama originally ran on the BBC from 1978-90.

James Wight went toyorkshire from Glasgow in 1940, where he fell in love with the Dales and the woman he would marry, Joan Danbury.

The stories he wrote under the pen name James Herriot became international bestsellers.

The series made a triumphant return last year with an average 4.1 million viewers.

The next series returns with the spectre of war looming. Channel 5 said: “Change is afoot for our Darrowby residents – especially James and Helen, embarking on the next chapter as the wider world heads toward a period of great uncertainty.” Shooting will begin in spring with the same cast, including Nicholas Ralph as James and Samuel West his mentor Siegfried.

Callum Woodhouse will play Siegfried’s brother Tristan.
