THE TENDER BAR
In director George Clooney’s bland adaptation of JR Moehringer’s memoir, Tye Sheridan plays working-class kid JR, who wins a scholarship to study at Yale in the 1970s. His on/off romance with fellow student Sidney (Briana Middleton) is mostly tiresome but the film flickers into life when Ben Affleck pops up.
He plays JR’S affable, self-educated Uncle Charlie who runs a Charles Dickens-themed boozer in the back streets of Long Island. There’s a relaxed, laid-back charm to the boozesoaked scenes in the pub, but it’s like the 1980s sitcom
Cheers without the jokes.
