AARON’S JUST WILD ABOUT SPRINGING A SURPRISE LIKE RONNIE

- By Shane Macdermott

AARON WILDIG is desperate to cause a giantkilling of his own, 50 years after his hometown club Hereford’s heroics.

Colin Addison’s side produced the greatest FA Cup upset of all time when they dumped Newcastle out in the third round in 1972.

Playing in the fifth tier at the time, Hereford remain the lowest-ranked club to knock out top-flight opposition.

Now midfielder Wildig is out to make his mark as part of League One Morecambe’s bid to topple Premier League Tottenham today.

Wildig said: “I was born in Hereford and the FA Cup was always special in my house because of Ronnie Radford scoring against Newcastle. It would be great to be part of an upset along those lines.”

The Shrimps will relish the occasion after playing Chelsea behind closed doors at Stamford Bridge in the third round last season.

Wildig (above) added: “It will be a special experience to play in a packed stadium. Last year against Chelsea was surreal. There were no fans and you got changed in the hotel.”

His side have a

Spurs connection in striker Jon Obika, who started his career there and partnered Harry Kane in the youth set-up.

Morecambe manager Steve Robinson will miss the game after testing positive for Covid.

A Spurs apprentice at the time of Paul Gascoigne, Robinson recalls: “Gazza used to have his chicken and chips at about 1.30 on a Saturday.

“He’d give you 20 quid to go and get it so we’d be queuing up to do that for him.”
