SINGER Sinead O’connor laid her teenage son to rest yesterday in a “lovely Hindu ceremony” that he would have loved.

The Irish star revealed that she left a few packets of cigarettes in 17-yearold Shane’s coffin “in case there’s none in Heaven”.

The funeral, for which around 50 family and friends had been asked to wear colourful clothes, took place eight days after the teenager was found dead.

Speaking after the send-off, Sinead, who dressed in pink for the ceremony, tweeted: “We just said goodbye to our beautiful angel, Shaney. Very lovely Hindu ceremony. Shane will have loved it. He was always chanting ‘Om. Shanti’.

“I put a few packs of fags in the coffin for him in case there’s none in Heaven. He’ll have loved that too. Om. Shanti.”

Sinead, 55, had been admitted to hospital last week amid concerns for her safety.

The heartbroken singer confirmed the hospital news ontwitter following a spate of worrying messages on the social media platform.

Shane, whose father was folk singer Donal Lunny, was found a day after he was reported missing from Newbridge, County Kildare, on January 6.

He was last seen on Friday morning in thetallaght area of Dublin and his body was found in Bray, County

Wicklow later that day. In the early hours of January 8, Sinead tweeted: “My beautiful son, Nevi’im Nesta Ali Shane O’connor, the very light of my life, decided to end his earthly struggle today and is now with God.

“May he rest in peace and may no one follow his example. My baby. I love you so much. Please be at peace.” Following the news, Pogues star Shane Macgowan offered his support to the Nothing Compares 2 U singer.

He said: “Sinead, you have always been there for me and for so many people, you have been a comfort and a soul who is not afraid to feel the pain of the suffering.

“I pray that you can be comforted and find strength, healing and peace in your own sorrow and loss.

“He was a beautiful boy and I loved him.

“I pray that he can be at peace and also be able to stay connected with you. Love Shane.”

Sinead, who has three other children – Jake, Roisin and Yeshua – said in a tweet she was listening to a “mantra for peace of departed soul and grief” and added: “I’ve been playing this mantra for Shaney all week.

“Only this morning did I notice the date it was uploaded toyoutube. March 10. That was Shane’s birthday.”
