Stars’ fitness trainer wants mini-pe lessons to aid young

- By Tony Whitfield

CELEBRITY personal trainer Tyrone Brennand wants schools to increase the amount of physical education to help children recover from the pandemic and tackle youth crime.

Tyrone, 36, known as Ty, revealed how exercise saved his life after he became involved in gangs when he dropped out of college.

After being mentored by the Prince’s Trust, he set up his firm Be The Fittest.

His clients include model David Gandy, TV host Maya Jama, The Saturdays star Mollie King and Games of Thrones’ Nathalie Emmanuel.

Londoner Ty explained how PE had been vital to him as a youngster. He said: “It was the only subject I looked forward to. I wanted to move. When you exercise, you just feel good.”

In adulthood he got in with the wrong crowd. He said: “Fitness saved my life. Everyone was saying ‘Ty, you should do something in fitness’, so I decided to turn my life around.”

Reflecting on the toll the pandemic took on youngsters, he said: “A lot of them were stuck at home. You are seeing so many looking overweight.”

He added: “Schools should try to put on a little more physical activities within the week, for example five to 10 minutes in the morning.”

Ty is mentoring a scheme where young trainers would take the classes and get children moving – and he wants the Government to get involved.

He said: “It’s not like PE is a quick fix to the problem of gangs but PE classes and sports can definitely impact kids’ behaviour, keeping them out of trouble.

“Kids often have built-up stress and energy they need to release, and PE classes help. If it means it keeps them off the streets or their games consoles it’s a step in the right direction.”
