Let’s hear it for kind manly men for once

-

DOES PRINCE Harry wake up in the morning and wonder how annoying he can be today? Interviewed on NBC he talked about his recent brief meeting with the Queen.

“Being with her it was great,” said the awful boy. “It was just so nice to see her, she’s on great form. She’s always got a great sense of humour with me and I’m just making sure that she’s protected and got the right people around her. Both Meghan and I had tea with her, so it was really nice to catch up with her.”

So touching! Looking out for his old grandma on a flying visit from La-la Land and “making sure that she’s protected”.that sound you heard was the grinding of teeth from the Palace.

DON’T ALL women secretly want to do the Can-can at the Folies Bergère or be dancing dames in a Busby Berkeley spectacular revolving on a mirrored pedestal or be Tiller Girls or Radio City Rockettes?

Imagine being able to high-kick for minutes on end without breaking sweat… or dying. Imagine having those endless legs.

Auditions for the Rockettes began last week at Radio City Music Hall in Newyork. This is the first year that the height requirement for dancers has been lowered from 5ft 6in to

5ft 5in.yessss!! That means I’m in with a chance.

BARELY a day goes by without some newspaper columnist asking if they’re the only person left in the world who hasn’t had Covid. So I think it’s my turn now.am I the only person left in the world who hasn’t had Covid?

Am I – as I now like to think of myself – Omega Woman, based on the 1971 Charlton Heston film The Omega Man, in which he thinks he is the only person to be immune to a global plague which turns those it doesn’t kill into nocturnal albino mutants?

SIGNS you’re getting old. Here’s another one. Though you’re a stunningly beautiful actress of only 40 it’s considered necessary to find another actress to play your younger self. An actress who, one might add, doesn’t look much like you at all.

That’s Sienna Miller’s fate in the Netflix drama Anatomy Of A Scandal. She is portrayed in her student days by Hannah Dodd who is 26. Poor Sienna. At least, ladies, that’s one indignity which most of us non-thesps don’t have to endure.

CHRIS (not his real name because I don’t want to share him) gave me a pitying look as I picked up a vast ceramic plant pot, staggered a few feet, and then put it down again. I’m as strong as an ox but this was way above my pay grade. Chris, who was putting up my new garden shed, waved me aside, picked up not just the first ceramic pot but also the second and carried them effortlessly to where they were supposed to go – one in each hand, as though they were porcelain teacups.

Chris, by the way, is well over six foot and looks like some ripped warrior from Game Of Thrones. He’s also really nice.

Much as I hate to admit there are some things a man can do which a woman can’t, it was lovely to have a big kindly man like Chris do something for me that I really couldn’t do by myself.

It was good to hand over the reins of competence for once. And it was even nicer because he didn’t act like he should have a medal.

We hear so much about toxic masculinity that I thought it was time someone spoke up for men.

It’s not much fun being an ordinary bloke these

‘He’s not an anti-hero. He’s a hero, plain and simple’

days. Men are always being urged to get in touch with their female side, whatever that means. Men are presumed to be dangerous and angry. Misogyny is a given.

Meanwhile, Johnny Depp (his looks long gone) sits glumly in the witness box trying to restore his shattered reputation and Emmanuel Macron’s hairy chest becomes an object of worldwide ridicule .

Maybe it’s because I’ve been watching Reacher on Netflix. Lee Child’s Jack Reacher books are massively popular with women.

Reacher is an ex-military loner, 6ft 5in and built like a barn. He isn’t a conflicted alcoholic or depressive. He’s not an anti-hero. He’s a hero, plain and simple.

Preferring to own nothing, not even a mobile phone, he keeps moving, sorting out trouble when he sees it.

He’s decent and he’s kind to women, he has a sense of humour and doesn’t care for fancy food.

His perfection is enhanced by the fact he had a French mother which makes him seem more interesting than a cornfed American jock.

In the screen version he’s played by Alan Ritchson, who’s terrific and the right sort of size – as in, big.

(Tom Cruise took the role a decade ago, which was so wrong on so many levels.)

So let’s hear it for big, kind, humorous men who aren’t wussy metrosexuals, whose pronouns are definitely he/him and who can do strong things.

Let’s hear it for manly men for once.they’re lovely.
