Chance to improve lives

- By John Glen CHIEF SECRETARY TO THE TREASURY

IN this week’s Budget, Sunday Express readers want us to take the steps we can to make their lives better.

Our top priorities are growing the economy, halving inflation and reducing debt, as well as cutting NHS waiting times and stopping the boats.

We want to grow the economy so wages rise, to reduce debt to put the country’s finances on a stable footing and to bear down on inflation so that people’s money goes further.

For businesses to thrive, boost wages and create new opportunities, they need to be able to recruit a skilled workforce.

Unemployment is at a near-record low, which is a huge success story, but it means thousands of bosses are on the lookout for new workers.

Part of the reason people voted for Brexit is because they wanted us to train up those here rather than importing workers from abroad.

Nearly nine million people aren’t engaging with the labour market – a lost opportunity for them to improve their lives and for businesses with jobs to offer.

Those with a health condition or a disability and older workers are most at risk of dropping out of the labour market.we want to break the barriers that hold them back, so that we can grow as a nation and make use of our full potential.

Our ambition is to support people to not only enter work but to increase their earnings. Our reforms will change the way we assess the capabilities of the disabled and those with health conditions, so they’re able to try work without losing benefits.

Welfare claimants will be supported to move into work or increase their earnings through changes to the Universal Credit system.they’ll also benefit from extended programmes to help people find work.

Our approach boosts opportunities so that more people can benefit from moving into work, supporting our businesses and growing our economy.
