Most back end to routine puberty blocker

- By David Williamson POLITICAL EDITOR

A STRONG majority of Britons support stopping the prescription of “puberty blockers” to children and young people by gender clinics, an exclusive poll reveals.

Some 58 per cent back NHS England’s decision to halt the provision of drugs that prevent the onset of puberty to under-18s.

Just 17 per cent want the prescription of the medication to continue.

And 71 per cent of respondents to the Wethink poll agree with the recommendation of the review by Dr Hilary Cass that “extreme caution” should be taken before “masculinising/feminising hormones” are given to 16 and 17-year-olds.

Only five per cent don’t think that caution should be exercised in those cases.

As for whether there should be support services for those seeking gender transition, 38 per cent strongly agree and 24 per cent somewhat agree, compared to 13 per cent who disagreed.

The Cass review made headlines with its warning there is “remarkably weak evidence” backing up current child gender treatments.

Shadow Health Secretarywes Streeting has described the report as a “watershed moment” and vowed to follow the recommendations.

But there are calls for Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer to apologise to Labour MP Rosie Duffield for her poor treatment based on her views on the issue of gender identity.

She has campaigned for the preservation of “single-sex spaces” and backed the UK Government’s move to stop the introduction of a system of gender self-id in Scotland.

A Labour MP described the “intimidation” she has received from some MPS as a result as

worries about children were ignored. He added: “The clinicians working in the gender identity service were very influenced by some of the ‘trans’ charities and became ideologically, not clinically, driven. The trust’s services became so politicised.anyone who tried to have a discussion about it got criticised or called a bigot.”

Dr Evans said the Cass report should be a “watershed moment” in the way “fragile” and “confused” children who question their gender are treated.

He said: “It is an absolute scandal that an experimental treatment on vulnerable children has been allowed to continue for so long. Where was NHS England? Where have the Royal Colleges been to protect these children?what has been going on?”
