Star Adjoa: Bridgerton fans burst into tears when they see me!

- By David Stephenson TV EDITOR

BRIDGERTON star Adjoa Andoh says fans of the period drama really think she is Lady Danbury – and often “burst into tears” when they see her.

The actress, who portrays Queen Charlotte’s confidante in the Regency-era Netflix show, feels such a trusted figure that people on the street pour their hearts out to her wherever she goes.

Adjoa, 61, said: “I can be in Mauritius, or I can be in Paris, Milan or Accra and people will know you from Bridgerton.

“I get different reactions. People burst into tears or they tell you about their kids. Or they also tell you about how watching the show made them feel, or gave them comfort. Or they just like your

swag, ‘Where did you get your hats?’.”

She will next be seen in The Red King on UKTV, as Lady Nancarrow, a councillor on an isolated island where a murder takes place.

And the third series of Bridgerton will start streaming next month, which is set to be even “raunchier” than the last, with a threesome scene and a lesbian romp.

Much of the new season will focus on the friendsto-lovers storyline of Penelope Featherington – actress Nicole Coughlan – and Colin Bridgerton, played by actor Luke Newton.

Adjoa said: “It’s about the character who’s supposed to stay at home and look after mother. She’s not supposed to be fit for anything else. That’s Penelope. But actually for her, she has this alterego, who is Lady Whistledown, who is waspish, funny, sharp, and wise and observant. And this is the moment for this little wallflower.

“I think it’s satisfying for all of us who were slightly like that wallflower and slightly irritated, to watch this wallflower come into her own.”
