”The vagina is a self-cleaning organ,” explains Dr Lakhani. “One of the worst things you can do is over-cleanse or douche (washing internally), which can disrupt the delicate natural balance.

“If the ph increases, the vagina can be prone to infections, including bacterial vaginosis or thrush. And knickers should be replaced after 50 washes. Now we’re all washing clothes at only 30 or 40°C, bacteria can build up in fabric. You wouldn’t keep mascara for three years – treat pants the same way.”
