What to do in the garden this week

● Keep on top of weeds until newly planted veg such as courgettes have covered the ground with foliage so they are smothered out naturally.

● Take cuttings of perennial wallflower­s. They have quite a short life and therefore will need replacing every three to four years. ● Put up canes round soft fruit bushes and cover with netting as soon as the first fruits reach full size. Don’t wait for them to ripen or the birds will eat them.

● If you’re taking a summer holiday in August and want to return to a fresh crop of flowers, sow hardy annuals now for early and mid-autumn colour.
