Our expert reveals why the end of summer should be coming up rosés

-

Pink wines have been traditionally seen as summer drinks – perfect for popping when it’s warm and bright, and especially for alfresco eating.

There’s something beautiful about the sight of a bottle of rosé in the ice bucket, and this is a visual wine as much as it is about the flavour. But now rosé has expanded its drinking calendar, and it’s a firm fixture for the shoulder seasons too.

Here are seven that I’ve recently enjoyed.

Lafage Miraflors Rosé 2021, Côtes Catalanes, France, 12.5% alcohol, £13, Alteus Wines, Vinvm, Allaboutwine A beautifully packaged wine, with citrus, cranberry, a hint of rhubarb and pear, finishing harmoniously.

Cune Rioja Rosado 2021, Rioja, Spain,13% alcohol, £8.50, Co-op

Pale orange-pink in colour, this has a creamy texture and bright mandarin notes, finishing with a spicy flourish.

The Pale, Rosé by Sacha Lichine 2020, Vin de Pays du Var, France,12.5% alcohol, £13.99, Waitrose

With striking packaging, this pale rosé has strawberry notes, rhubarb and a touch of sweetness. Very stylish.

La Belle Angèle Rosé 2021, France, 12% alcohol, £8.99, Majestic

This is a brightly fruited pink wine with juicy cherry and cranberry notes, and some orange rind complexity.

Fleurs de Prairie Rosé 2021, Luberon, France, 13.5% alcohol, £8, Morrisons

Very fruity and aromatic on the nose with sweet cherries and citrus, leading to bold melon and some pear and peach flavours. Good value and lovely packaging.

Gentle Riot Semi-sparkling Rosé 2021, France, 11% alcohol, £14.99, Laithwaites

This is a pink wine made from merlot, and made in the same way as Prosecco. It’s bright, fresh and fruity with raspberry and cherry as well as some citrus and pear. Delicious.

Ramón Bilbao Rosado 2021 Rioja, Spain, 12.5% alcohol, £8, Tesco

Pale pink, this has a really aromatic nose of strawberries, spice, caramel and cinnamon. In the mouth, it’s fresh, supple and juicy with a slight green note and juicy cherry fruit quality. There’s a lovely drinkability to this wine, which shows good balance.
