Christmas wreath

Form the basic shape out of wire netting stuffed with moss, then push in short pieces of conifer foliage so they overlap to cover the framework. Add in sprigs of berried holly or pyracantha for decoration.

A quicker option is to buy a foam wreath base from a florist’s shop then decorate.

For a more minimalist look, cut a bunch of birch twigs and twist them round into an informal “knot” (which you can hold in place with floristry wire), then glue on a few dried flower heads, nuts, fir cones or dried orange peel twirls.

If you decide you want a fresh wreath, spray it with water daily to keep it fresh.

Swags and garlands

These are the sort of thing country houses used to string along the bannisters and fireplaces but nowadays they look good running round the inside of the conservatory roof.

Take a length of thick, natural hemp rope and bind short sprays of foliage to it with thin wire or invisible thread so they overlap and make a continuous, leafy daisy chain.

Then decorate with cones, nuts, dried flowers, berries, acorns or small fruits such as crab apples, fixing securely with a florist’s wire first.

It’s simple, but really effective.
