Officials aim to make GB a World Cup winner in Qatar
TRADE OFFICIALS will meet their Qatari counterparts today in a bid to help British businesses land more contracts for the 2022 World Cup.
The Department for International Trade claims to have helped firms win £940million worth of export orders for the World Cup, which will be held in the Middle East for the first time.
Officials hope that today’s talks will help secure at least £500million worth of additional contracts for British firms, who have worked on project management, design, architecture and supply chains for the World Cup.
International Trade minister
George Hollingbery, said: “If our nations have as much success at
Qatar 2022 as UK businesses are having supporting it, we are in for another great tournament.”
The decision to award the tournament to Qatar is highly controversial, due to allegations that it secured the tournament by bribing officials at FIFA, football’s world governing body, as well as accusations that the migrant workers building stadiums are being exploited.
Fans, players and clubs are angry as it also means the cup will be played in November, during the domestic football season. Additionally, they are concerned about the restrictions the Arab state will impose on fans.
