Alcohol-related hospital

- By Lucy Johnston

MORE than one million people are admitted to hospital every year with alcohol-related problems – double that of 10 years ago.

The health issues, which include cancers, heart disease and liver disease, account for seven per cent of all hospital inpatient stays.

And 1,544 patients were admitted to hospital 10 times or more with problems “wholly attributable” to alcohol, separate data reveals.

The figures come as health experts warn of a surge in alcohol-related hospital admissions on “Black Eye Friday” this week – when city streets fill with alcohol-fuelled Christmas party revellers.

Statistics compiled by this paper from NHS Digital and the Office for National Statistics reveal 1.1 million people were admitted to hospital last year with diseases linked to alcohol – almost double that of 2006/7 when the figure was 681,380.

And 46 per cent of inpatients with problems linked to alcohol were aged between 55 and 74. Almost two-thirds were male.

Fifty one per cent of admissions were for potentially deadly alcohol-related heart disease,

17 per cent were for alcohol-related mental and behavioural disorders.

Other alcohol-associated inpatient stays include liver disease,
