WHENEVER you talk to Ashley Giles you are struck by the combination of common sense and strength of purpose in his thinking about cricket.

He was poorly treated a few years ago, when losing the role of England ODI coach.

Giles responded not with bitterness but with renewed excellent work in the county game, and his imminent elevation to become England director of cricket is cause for celebration.
